Prez Akufo-Addo urges Africa Tech Leaders to approach AI with caution

President Nana Akufo-Addo has urged ‘African tech leaders’ to embrace ‘Artificial Intelligence’ (AI) with a balanced approach, emphasizing both caution and proactivity.

The call came during his keynote address at the “Forward Africa Leaders Symposium” held on the sidelines of the 79th ‘United Nations General Assembly’ in New York.

Speaking to a gathering of ‘technology and digital development experts’, Akufo-Addo highlighted the transformative potential of AI in addressing Africa’s pressing challenges.

He noted that AI could be instrumental in areas such as “predicting disease outbreaks” and “improving agricultural practices”, potentially accelerating the continent’s development.

However, He also stressed the importance of ethical considerations in AI adoption.

“However, we have to approach AI with caution. We need to ensure that it is used ethically and that its benefits are shared by all, not just a few,” Akufo-Addo stated, underlining the need for responsible AI implementation.

The President emphasized the critical role of ‘education’ in preparing Africa for the AI revolution. He called for increased investment in ‘STEM education’ (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), stating that it’s essential for equipping young Africans to lead in the emerging AI-driven world.

The symposium, organized by Africa Soft Power in collaboration with Convene Africa and the Development Bank of Ghana, provided a platform for discussions on leveraging technology for Africa’s progress.
